Why Heritage Hindi?

If you can speak and comprehend Hindi with your family and community, these language courses are for you! You will improve your reading and writing skills, you communicative and sociocultural competence, and your analytic understanding of the language.

Prospective Students

  • There are two levels of Heritage Hindi based on student proficiency: regular (LIHL 119) and advanced (LIHL 139*).
  • Each level is taught three times a year in Fall (F), Winter (W) and Spring (P).
  • Each iteration of the course is 4 units of upper division credit and has a different area of emphasis.
  • Students may take all three courses at a single level in any order.
*LIHL 139 Advanced Hindi will be offered dependent on enrollment.

Courses

Hind Calendar: Fall Quarter LIHL 119F and 139F, family life and festivals are offered. Winter Quarter 119W and 139W, media and the arts are offered. Spring Quarter 119P and 139P, entertainment and culture are offered. Students can take all 2 quarters in or out of sequence. Courses offered twice a week on Tues and Thurs.

Can LIHL Hindi courses count for majors, minors, GEs or language requirements?

LIHL 119F - Linguistics/Hindi for Hindi Speakers

For students who speak and comprehend informal spoken Hindi but wish to improve their communicative and sociocultural competence and their analytic understanding. Language functions for oral communication, reading, writing, and family life/festivals; dialect and language style differences; structure and history of Hindi. May not receive credit for both LIHL119 and LIHL119F. Courses may be taken in any order. Prerequisites: upper-division standing or consent of instructor; appropriate proficiency for level.

LIHL 119W - Linguistics/Hindi for Hindi Speakers

For students who speak and comprehend informal spoken Hindi but wish to improve their communicative and sociocultural competence and their analytic understanding. Language functions for oral communication, reading, writing, and media/arts; dialect and language style differences; structure and history of Hindi. May not receive credit for both LIHL119 and LIHL119W. Courses may be taken in any order. Prerequisites: upper-division standing or consent of instructor; appropriate proficiency for level.

LIHL 119P - Linguistics/Hindi for Hindi Speakers

For students who speak and comprehend informal spoken Hindi but wish to improve their communicative and sociocultural competence and their analytic understanding. Language functions for oral communication, reading, writing, and entertainment/culture; dialect and language style differences; structure and history of Hindi. May not receive credit for both LIHL119 and LIHL119P. Courses may be taken in any order. Prerequisites: upper-division standing or consent of instructor; appropriate proficiency for level.

LIHL 139F - Linguistics/Advanced Hindi for Hindi Speakers

Instruction stresses language function required for advanced oral communication, reading, writing, and cultural understanding in professional contexts, with emphasis on domestic culture. High-level vocabulary and texts; dialect differences and formal language styles (registers). Advanced structural analysis and history of Hindi. LIHL139F, LIHL139W, and LIHL139P may be taken in any order. Prerequisites: upper-division standing or consent of instructor; appropriate proficiency for level.

LIHL 139W - Linguistics/Advanced Hindi for Hindi Speakers

Instruction stresses language function required for advanced oral communication, reading, writing, and cultural understanding in professional contexts, with emphasis on media/arts. High-level vocabulary and texts; dialect differences and formal language styles (registers). Advanced structural analysis and history of Hindi. LIHL139F, LIHL139W, and LIHL139P may be taken in any order. Prerequisites: upper-division standing or consent of instructor; appropriate proficiency for level.

LIHL 139P - Linguistics/Advanced Hindi for Hindi Speakers

Instruction stresses language function required for advanced oral communication, reading, writing, and cultural understanding in professional contexts, with emphasis on entertainment/culture. High-level vocabulary and texts; dialect differences and formal language styles (registers). Advanced structural analysis and history of Hindi.
