Petitions

The Linguistics Language Program (LLP) reviews petitions to determine if a language course taken outside of UC San Diego is equivalent to the fourth quarter level course offered at UC San Diego.  A petition for credit beyond the fourth quarter level must be submitted to the Literature Department (except Arabic and Portuguese). Students typically submit language petitions to LLP in order to meet their college general education requirement or major language requirement.

Petition procedures for:

Abroad Courses

(1)    Complete an Undergraduate Student Petition.

  • The course and grade must be posted to your academic history on TritonLink before you submit the petition.
  • Include the course # (as it appears on TritonLink), course title, # of units, grade received, quarter/semester the course was taken, the college or university in which you completed the course and the requirement you are seeking to fulfill (e.g. ERC language requirement or International Studies language requirement).
  • Please also sign and date the petition.

(2)    Complete the LLP Supplement for Language Petition form.

(3)    Attach all coursework.

  • Required: Syllabus
  • Optional: Textbook, homework, etc.

(4)    Submit completed Undergraduate Student Petition, LLP Supplement to Language Petition form and coursework to the Linguistics Language Program (LLP) Office.

(5)    Notification & Processing

  • You will be notified via the Virtual Advising Center in approximately four weeks with the results of your petition.
  • Timeline: This four week period can be longer or shorter depending on when you turn your petitions in during the review cycle.

Community College Courses

(1)    Check to see if there is already an existing articulation agreement on assist.org.

  • An articulation agreement shows if a course taken at a California community college has been determined to be equivalent to a course offered at UC San Diego.
    • Not all courses have articulation agreements.
    • If an articulation agreement exists, and the course you completed is equivalent to the 4th quarter level course at UC San Diego, please contact your college or major advisor to inform them of the articulation.  They will update your degree audit.
    • If an articulation agreement does not exist, you will need to proceed to step 2.

(2)    Complete an Undergraduate Student Petition.

  • Third semester language course is auto-approved to count as a fourth quarter language course at UC San Diego.

UC Davis

  • Fourth quarter language course is auto-approved to count as a fourth quarter language course at UC San Diego.

UC Irvine

  • Fourth quarter language course is auto-approved to count as a fourth quarter language course at UC San Diego.

UCLA

  • Fourth quarter language course is auto-approved to count as a fourth quarter language course at UC San Diego.

UC Merced

  • Third semester language course is auto-approved to count as a fourth quarter language course at UC San Diego.

UC Riverside

  • Fourth quarter language course is auto-approved to count as a fourth quarter language course at UC San Diego.

UC Santa Barbara

  • Fourth quarter language course is auto-approved to count as a fourth quarter language course at UC San Diego.

UC Santa Cruz

  • Fourth quarter language course is auto-approved to count as a fourth quarter language course at UC San Diego.

Non-UC University Courses
