Admission to the graduate program is managed through the Admissions Committee
which is comprised of representatives from both the faculty and
graduate students and is appointed annually. The Admissions
Committee evaluates applicants based on their past academic performance.
Important factors in the evaluation of an application include: the
nature of the undergraduate course program that the student has
undertaken, statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation,
scores on the Graduate Record Exam, and an optional sample
of linguistic work. All elements of the application are viewed and
considered. If you are an international student and English is not
your native language, you must take the Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam in addition to the GRE. The
Office of Graduate Studies and Research at UCSD requires a minimum
GPA of 3.0 for admission to graduate school.
Online Applications: UCSD offers a web-based application
with the intention of making our application process as easy and
convenient as possible for you. Applications will be available on
July 7. To get started go to http://graduateapp.ucsd.edu/.
Application Deadlines: Deadline for application is December
15. Admissions are always effective the following Fall quarter.
We accept applications for the Fall quarter only.
GRE. We require the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination
(GRE) for all applicants, regardless of the degree they hold. Official
scores from ETS for the General GRE should be sent directly to the
department. GRE scores are valid only if they are no more than five
years old. For more information on the GRE, visit their Website
at http://www.gre.org.
TOEFL for International Students. The Test of English as
a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for International applicants
whose native language is not English and whose undergraduate education
was conducted in a language other than English.
Official test scores must be submitted to the Office of
Graduate Admissions. TOEFL scores are only valid if they are
no more than two years old. The minimum TOEFL score required
for consideration for admission is 550 for the paper and
pencil administered test, or 213 for the computer-based test.
For more information on the TOEFL, visit their Website at http://www.toefl.org.
