New Graduate Students
UCSD Linguistics welcomes the class of ten incoming PhD candidates for Fall 2008: Gwendolyn Gillingham, Noah Girgis, Emily Hayes, Bathany Keffala, Boyoung Kim, Lara Klainerman, Ryan Lepic, Rodolfo Mata, Hope Morgan, and Staci Osborn. We are excited about the wide range of talents they will be bringing with them to UCSD!
SDLP
The 3rd Issue of the San Diego Linguistics Papers has been published online. SDLP is the occassional working papers published by the Department of Linguistics at UCSD.
This issue features four articles on syntax and semantics by Yuki Koroda, Jean Mark Gawron (SDSU), Shin Fukuda, and Henry Beecher.
Dissertation Defenses
Congratulations to Hannah Rohde and Nayoung Kwon who both defended their dissertations in summer 2008. Hannah's thesis was titled Coherence-Driven Effects in Sentence & Discourse Processing, and she was advised by Andy Kehler. She will be at Northwestern University next year through the prestigious two-year Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Linguistics.
Nayoung's thesis was titled Processing of long-distance syntactic and referential gap-filler dependencies: Evidence from reading time, ERP and eye-tracking data in Korean, and she was advised by Robert Kluender. Next year she will be a postdoctral researcher at Harvard University and a lecturer at Wellesly College. We are very proud of all that they have accomplished so far, and wish them the best of luck in their futures.
Visiting Scholar
Florian Siegl from the Department of Estonian and General Linguistics (University of Tartu, Estonia) was a visiting Finno-Ugric scholar at the UCSD Linguistics Dept. and the Human Development Program to work with Farrell Ackerman. Focusing on Samoyed languages of Siberia, for the past 2 years Florian has done extensive documentation fieldwork on Forest Enets, a moribund Uralic Language from Northern Siberia spoken by less than a dozen individuals. This research is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.
Dissertation Defenses
Congratulations to Ezra van Everbroeck , Nicoleta Bateman and Jeremy Boyd on successfully defending their dissertations this summer. Ezra's thesis was titled A Connectionist Model of the Effect of Pro-Drop on SVO Languages and he was advised by Maria Polinsky and Gary Cottrell. Nicoleta's thesis was titled A Crosslinguistic Investigation of Palatalization and she was advised by Sharon Rose. Jeremy's thesis was Comparatively Speaking: A Psycholinguistic Study of Optionality in Grammar, advised by Farrell Ackerman. We wish Ezra, Nicoleta and Jeremy the best of luck as our newest departmental alumni!
Teaching award
Congratulations to Cindy Kilpatrick, who has been selected for a Barbara J. and Paul D. Saltman Excellent Teaching Award. This is a prestigious award for distinguished teaching by a graduate student. She will be honored at a ceremony on Friday June 1st at the Faculty Club.

Nicoleta Bateman will begin a tenure-track position as a linguistics professor in Liberal Studies at CSU San Marcos.
Post-doctoral position
Congratulations to Jeremy Boyd on his new post-doctoral position working with Adele Goldberg at Princeton University.
